This is a blog for people who teach Spanish, and who like talking about issues and problems from their courses, and ideas on how to be a better Spanish college professor.

Letter of recommendation for an MBA
I have a question. A former student has asked me to write a letter of recommendation for hir application to an MBA. I am glad to do it, and it is probably a good idea for hir to do it. However, because of ignorance and a touch of prejudice, I have no idea how to write a letter of recommendation to an MBA. Do any of you have any experience with it? The student was a solid, responsible B student. Not an intellectual powerhouse, but perfectly able to do graduate studies. I don't know what a committee would be looking for in the letter, though. Suggestions?

Some basics--
ReplyDelete1. Critical thinking skills.
2. Quantative skills. You probably can't say much there.
3. Communication skills, oral and written.
4. More broadly, "people skills." Potential as a manager of a team, or as a member of a team. Can this person lead? Can she check her ego at the door and follow?
5. Willingness/ability to plunge into new environment and learn as you go. Learning a new language seems a perfect metaphor for the work environment this person will face later.
6. Responsibility, ability to complete a task on time.
7. Honesty. And all the other qualities you think are generally worthy.
8. Drive/ambition. How badly does she want to succeed? Is she willing to go through a minor hell (business school) to get to the other end?
9. Would you hire this person to manage your small business?
Thanks, this is very helpful.
